Direct Taxation

The Central Board of Direct Taxes allowed taxpayers to verify their electronic returns by means of Electronic Verification Code.

As far back as 2010, the Department received e-filed tax returns, which though filed electronic did not contain a digital signature. As such, taxpayers had to fill out ‘ITR-V’ and return it to Bengaluru within 120 of e-filing. However, since taxpayers have neglected to return ITR-V, leaving many returns unconcluded.

With provision for EVC verification, the Department notified 31 August 2016 as the last date by which taxpayers must complete verification, if not already done so. The Department reserves the right to treat returns which have not had ITR-V or EVC verification after the due date as non-filed returns.
