SC: Recoveries U/S 27 of Evidence Act Alone Cannot Sustain Conviction; 1988 Murder Acquittal Restored - (29 Jul 2026)

LAW OF EVIDENCE

Supreme Court restored the acquittal of six men in a 1988 murder case, holding that recoveries under Section 27 of the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 (now Section 23 BSA) alone cannot sustain a conviction unless independently linked to the crime by reliable evidence.
