Supreme Court: After the BNSS, a Pre-Cognizance Hearing is Mandatory in PMLA Cases - (21 May 2026)

CRIMINAL

Supreme Court ruled that if cognizance of a Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 offence is taken after the BNSS came into force, courts must first hear the accused under Section 223(1) BNSS, even where the complaint was filed earlier, failing which the cognizance would stand vitiated.
