Cal HC: Contractual Marriage on Stamp Paper is Void and Cannot Sustain Bigamy or Cruelty Charges - (09 Mar 2026)

CRIMINAL

Calcutta High Court quashed criminal proceedings for bigamy and cruelty, holding that a “marriage” based only on signing a non-judicial stamp paper is not valid under Hindu law in India and cannot sustain charges under Sections 494 or 498A of the Indian Penal Code.
