SC: Magistrates Can Order Voice Samples From Witnesses, Not Just Accused, No Article 20(3) Breach - (14 Oct 2025)

CRIMINAL

Supreme Court held that Magistrates can direct voice samples from both accused and witnesses, as such samples are material evidence, not testimonial. Hence, collecting voice, fingerprint, handwriting, or DNA samples doesn’t violate Article 20(3)’s protection against self-incrimination.
