DGCA releases draft norms to ensure safety of leased aircraft- (Ministry of Civil Aviation) (17 Jun 2016)
Miscellaneous
Wondering why your Spicejet flight had ‘Corendon' splashed all across its side? The Directorate General of Civil Aviation certainly is and it has introduced draft criteria for leasing of aircraft by Indian operators.
Aside from requiring intricate monitoring and registering requirements for the aircraft and ensuring its airworthiness, the DGCA is discouraging of Indian carriers utilising wet and damp leased planes (aircraft leased from a foreign carrier, with accompanying manpower). Such leases will be permitted only in “emergency situations” such as unexpected grounding of own aircraft, scheduled maintenance or other unforeseen circumstances.
It expressly disallows use of wet and damp leased aircraft as means of increasing capacity or expanding routes. Aircraft aged 15 years or more will not be permitted to be leased for ferrying passengers, and must also be “free from accident”.
